Think of Scottish Country Dancing as a cross between square or contra dance
and ballet. It's a modern form of the country dancing popular in
England and Scotland in the 18th century. The dances developed over many centuries as
itinerant dance masters traveled from clan to clan teaching dances. Dances are of three
types, distinguished by their tempos: lively reels, moderately fast
jigs, and slow strathspeys.
